Because Hawaii is a place of such diverse cultures, it became inevitable that elements of these cultures would overlap – particularly in the food. Because of it, quite a few new dishes have been created, so, if you are ever in Hawaii, you should be sure to try them. Without further ado, here is a Hawaii food bucket list (from a local). I’ve been kind of obsessed with sunsets lately. I mean, check out my Instagram feed where four out of the last five of my posts are of sunsets (or sunrises). I completely believe that Hawaii has the best sunsets – and I say this after watches sunsets in dozens of locations, including California, Switzerland, and Australia. But where exactly is the best place to watch the sunset on Oahu, Hawaii?
I’ve done my fair share of traveling – I mean, I studied abroad in Switzerland for eight months. I’ve seen people of many cultures, both inside and outside of their home region. However, there is always one group that stands out more than all others: my fellow Americans. So here are ten ways to spot an American abroad.
While visiting big, booming cities is always great, some of my favorite trips have been when I’ve visited the most random tiny towns, and I’ve decided to share some of them with you. So without further ado, here are 10 tiny bucket list-worthy towns around the world.
Hawaii, as a place of diverse cultures and languages, has developed its own dialect, known as “pidgin”. Before I left Hawaii to go to school on the “mainland” (also known as the continental U.S.), I didn’t realize how often pidgin made its way into our everyday forms of speech. So to help you out, here is a list of 24 local pidgin words you need to know when visiting Hawaii.
At first, I was a little hesitant to visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver, Canada. I mean, it had a hefty price-tag of $42 for an adult ticket – albeit $42 Canadian dollars so at least the conversion rate was a bit in my favor. But still, that was a lot of money to walk across a bridge, right? But with some prodding from other friends, we decided to do it, and I’m so glad we did. So is the Capilano Suspension Bridge worth a visit? The answer is a resounding yes, and here are eight reasons why. Continue reading “Is the Capilano Suspension Bridge Worth a Visit?”

Poke is a traditional Hawaiian dish, typically made with ahi (not “ahi tuna”, friends – that just means “tuna tuna”), soy sauce (locals call it “shoyu”), seaweed, and other seasonings. So odds are, if you haven’t had poke in Hawaii, you’ve had some weird version of poke with avocado or hot Cheeto crumbs (yes, I’ve seen poke with both of these). To help you out in your search for some authentic poke, here are four places to get the best poke on Oahu, Hawaii. Continue reading “Four Places to Get the Best Poke on Oahu, Hawaii”
As most people know, California was in a severe drought from 2013-2017. Even now, when the state is supposedly no longer extremely deprived of water, it is quite difficult to find water-based natural landmarks, like rivers, creeks, and waterfalls, that actually have a decent amount of water flowing through them. I actually hiked a different waterfall a few weeks ago, and it only had a trickle of water. But I was determined to find a nearby waterfall hike to satisfy by obsession (as seen by this post and this one and this one). So when I found a SoCal waterfall with water, I was hyped.
